How Natter works

Between you and your people.

Natter is built so your chats and your location stay with the people you choose. Here is how, in plain English.

Your chats

Sealed on your phone.

  • Encrypted before it leaves. Your messages, photos and voice notes are encrypted on your phone. Only the people in the chat can open them.
  • We pass it on, we can't open it. Natter's servers hold the sealed message only until it's delivered. Your personal chats are end-to-end encrypted, so Natter cannot read them.
  • Your history lives with you. Received chats are kept on your devices, not on our servers.
A sealed message travels from your phone, through Natter, to Alex's phone. Natter passes it on but cannot open it. You Natter can't open it Alex

See for yourself

Check the seal.

  • Every personal chat has a security code. Open Verify security code in the chat to see yours and theirs.
  • Compare them in person, or scan their Natter QR code. If they match, your chat is end-to-end encrypted, and nobody in between can read it.

Atlas

Your location, for your people only.

  • Encrypted for the people you choose. When you share your location, your phone encrypts each update for them. Natter delivers it but can't see where you are.
  • You decide who sees you. Choose your people, and turn on Ghost mode to disappear from the map whenever you like.
  • My day stays on your phone. Your days are saved on your phone for seven days, and you can delete them at any time.

The maps themselves come from Apple or Google, who see the part of the map your phone loads, as with any map app.

Your location goes, encrypted, only to the people you chose: Jo and Mum. Natter in the middle cannot see it. You Natter can't see where you are Jo Mum
Only the people you chose can open your location.

See for yourself

Know who sees you.

  • Who sees me lists everyone. Every person who can see your location, in one list, on Atlas.
  • Stop one, or pause them all. Stop sharing with anyone in a tap, or turn on Ghost mode to pause everyone. Your people stay saved for when you're back.

Calls and backups

The same idea, everywhere.

  • Calls. Group calls encrypt their sound and video between the phones on the call.
  • Your backup, your cloud, your key. Backups are encrypted on your phone and kept in your own Google Drive or iCloud, not on Natter's servers. Only your password or recovery key opens them.
  • Locked when you want. An optional app lock, with Discreet Chat and hidden messages behind it.
Your phone encrypts your backup and stores it in your own cloud account; only your key opens it. Your phone Your own cloud Google Drive or iCloud

Plainly

What Natter does see.

What it needs to deliver

Your account, your devices, which chats you're in and when something is delivered. Never what's inside.

Fixing problems

The app sends diagnostics so we can fix crashes. They never contain messages, contacts or locations, and you can turn them off.

Chats with businesses

These are not end-to-end encrypted, and the chat says so: messages with a business go through Natter's servers and the business's own systems. The privacy notice explains more.
